Efficient Bridge Project Support for Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction

Client: Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company

Equipment Hauled: Manitowoc 14000 Lattice Boom Crawler Crane

Route: Houston, TX to Salt Lake City, UT

Project Type: Bridge Replacement

Scope: Multi-load crane disassembly and transport, single-day load-out and delivery

Challenge: Tight Project Schedule & Complex Equipment

Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, a leader in large-scale infrastructure projects, was tasked with replacing a key bridge span outside Salt Lake City. A Manitowoc 14000—a massive crawler crane weighing over 140,000 lbs fully assembled - was needed on-site and operational within a narrow delivery window. The crane was located at a Houston yard and needed to be disassembled, transported across state lines, and reassembled at the Utah job site within 48 hours.

The client was focused on minimizing costly downtime. A traditional multi-day loading and transport approach would have required multiple days of both loading and unloading crews on each end, adding expenses and complexity.

Our Solution: Precision-Executed, Single-Day Turnaround

Rocky Mountain Heavy Haul mobilized a specialized team to execute the entire operation in a compressed timeline, focusing on:

  • Pre-project logistics planning: RMHH coordinated directly with site supervisors and crane techs in both Texas and Utah to develop a detailed load map for the Manitowoc 14000's components.

  • Fleet allocation: The project required 7 loads, including:

    • Main body on a dual-lane RGN

    • Boom sections via stretch flatbeds

    • Counterweights on standard flatbeds

    • Auxiliary parts on stepdecks and hot shots

    • Same-day load-out: All equipment was loaded in Houston in a single day, thanks to synchronized arrival of trucks, crane disassembly crews, and RMHH's on-site coordinator.

    • Direct line-haul delivery: RMHH trucks ran non-stop with approved permitting and pilot car escorts to deliver all loads to Salt Lake City the very next day.

Results: Time & Cost Savings for the Contractor

  • Eliminated multiple-day crew deployments at both origin and destination

  • Reduced total handling costs for the Manitowoc 14000

  • Met project scheduling targets with no delays to bridge installation

  • Maintained FMCSA compliance with all permits, escorts, and securement requirements for oversize/overweight freight
